Cheeseburger | Weight Loss

cheeseburgerThis may be the pinnacle of American cuisine a cheeseburger, french fries, and a Coke. You can’t deny that it’s delicious, and thanks to the fast food empires we’ve built, it’s the easiest meal to come by in the history of eating. It’s also highly problematic, though not for the reasons you’ve been led to believe.

The average fast food burger itself is something of a health hazard, due to its high saturated fat content and the grease in which it’s cooked. Eating one a day is a very bad habit indeed, but as an occasional treat it can be accommodated into the South Beach regimen. However, if instead of this you have a burger in an upscale restaurant, or better yet at home, you begin to change it instantly. You can have a burger made from a good cut of meat, like sirloin, which is much leaner than common ground beef.

But what will you serve that burger on? The usual soft white bun is all sugar. It’s improved just by throwing the top half away and eating your meal with a knife and fork. Even better is to have that burger on whole wheat pita or sourdough bread instead of the bun. While sourdough bread is not whole grain, it has another quality that decreases its glycemic index—it is acidic. Acid slows down the stomach’s emptying of food into to the small intestine, meaning slower overall digestion and slower increase and subsequent decrease in blood sugar.

Best of all—see if you can live without any bread on it. Next, the ketchup should go—even if you don’t use much, it’s loaded with sugar. Tomato slices are fine. Lettuce, pickles, and onions are perfect.

Mustard’s great, and even mayonnaise, as long as you don’t overdo it. Remember to use the regular kind, not the low fat. Regular mayonnaise is high in fat, but it is predominantly soybean oil, a good fat. Salsa, hot sauce, steak sauce are all fine too.

The fries are diet wreckers, thanks to their starchy nature but also because of the bad fats in which they’re cooked. To improve the taste, some restaurants cook them in beef tallow, which just increases the danger. Even potato chips are a wiser choice. French-fried sweet potatoes are better yet, if cooked in a monounsaturated oil. Best of all: Find another vegetableВ  like a salad. But if you must have your potatoes once in a while, don’t supersize them.

The other lethal member of this trinity, the cola, must of course be replaced with a diet drink at the very least, if you can’t go all the way to water.

Replace your typical cheeseburger, fries, and Coke meal with a topless burger (removing the top half of the bun), a salad (such as the McDonalds McSalad Shaker with no cheese and Caesar dressing), and a diet soda, and the carbs drop dramatically.
